This workshop is intended for postgraduate students and early career researchers interested in expanding their knowledge of approaches and methods in TESOL research. It includes the following topics:
- topics in TESOL research
- aims of TESOL research
- research classifications
- nature of empirical research
- key research paradigms underlying research
- common processes in empirical research
- roles of the literature review
- research questions
- quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches
quality criteria for TESOL research.
Participants will have opportunities to explore and discuss research examples, exchange ideas and reflect on their learning, and develop research ideas.
Presenter
Aek Phakiti is an Associate Professor in TESOL at The University of Sydney, Australia. His research interests include language testing and assessment, second-language acquisition and research methods. Aek is the author and editor of numerous books in applied linguistics, including Experimental Research Methods in Language Learning (Bloomsbury, 2014), Quantitative Methods for Second Language Research: A Problem-solving Approach (Routledge, 2018), and Palgrave Handbook of Applied Linguistics Research Methodology (Palgrave, 2018).
The workshop is free but registration is required because places will be limited.
