Shaping experience in governance, leadership and engagement

A Comparative and International Education (CoInEd) Research Network event

Part of the CoInEd Research Mentoring Series

The 2020–2021 Research Mentoring Series, sponsored by the CoInEd Research Network, aims to engage HDR students and researchers across all levels in discussions about developing a robust and well-rounded research career within and beyond institutional settings. The series draws on the expertise of experienced researchers within the Sydney School of Education and Social Work, and addresses key areas of research and career development. Following our first event, on grants and consultancies, this presentation will consider possible strategies for career advancement and experience in areas of governance, leadership and engagement.

Future events will address managing editorships and journal work, and book publishing as sole-authors and co-editors. Until further notice, the series will be held online via Zoom, with the link provided to those who register via email with Alex at alexandra.mccormick@sydney.edu.au

  • What forms does career-enhancing collaborative research work take?
  • How can master’s and doctoral students begin to build portfolios of experience?
  • Which roles are a good ‘fit’ for particular research and teaching interests?
  • What are some strategies for planning?

This event aims to address these and related questions. Governance, leadership and engagement capture core components in the life and work of academia, and for practitioners and scholars in society more broadly. The CoInEd Research Network is one example of activities that are included within this area of our work as researchers, as well as much collaborative work within the school, faculty, journals, professional bodies, scholarly societies, and wider community. Guest speaker Ruth Phiilips will argue that these activities, which are frequently both collegial and rewarding, can also advance and enhance careers, and should also be considered strategically, to align with research projects and programs. The scope of advice and expertise Ruth is offering extends to related fields far beyond comparative and international education.
